Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay Management Committee

Up date provided by Keith Salmon

The Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay Management Committee works closely with the North Shore City Council to manage the Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay reserves in terms of the Management Plan.

The Committee meets monthly (normally the 3rd Tuesday of each month) and its minutes are reported to the Northcote and Birkenhead Community Board of the North Shore City Council.

The Committee is also involved in arranging:

In 2007, the committee won a some major grants from the ARC and the Birkenhead Trust/Lion Foundation to work towards clearing the Little Shoal Bay wetland of willows, wattles, pampas and other invasive exotics and to prepare a restoration plan to foster growth of native plants and to monitor the development of native fish such as inanga and kokupu in the wetland.

In 2008, thanks for grants from the Birkenhead/Northcote Community Board and the ARC, it is starting to clear the major invasion of pest plants in the upper reches of LeRoys Bush.

Want to help?

The Le Roys Bush and Little Shoal Bay Management Committee would always welcome new members who would like to help manage our 22 hectares of garden in Le Roys Bush, Little Shoal Bay and Lutners Reserves.

Many of us find it a very rewarding way to learn more about our native environment in the open air and to return something to our local community.

The main group project at the moment is clearing the valley below Maritime Terrace of wattles and other pest plants with enormous seed dispersal that threatens to take over the wetland and surrounding bush land.

We are also doing restoration planting at the lower end of Maritime Terrace.

We are also running projects to prepare two areas for native planting - at the Onewa Road entrance and behind the Highbury shops.

If anyone is interested to help out or become involved, we would be delighted to hear from them.
